Xiaomi Redmi 1S, priced at Rs 6,999, pre-registration could go live in India tomorrow

Xiaomi Redmi 1S, priced at Rs 6,999, pre-registration could go live in India tomorrow

After a long wait, Xiaomi could begin pre-registration for its most affordable smartphone, the Redmi 1S, tomorrow. Xiaomi India has posted a teaser on its Facebook page, asking readers to come back to the page tomorrow. If indeed the pre-registration goes live tomorrow, the first Redmi 1S flash sale could happen a week later on August 29. This was first spotted by The Techolic. The timing would be consistent with Xiaomi’s earlier announcement about launching the Redmi 1S towards the end of August.
UPDATE: Turns out we will have to wait a bit longer, after all.
If the Xiaomi Mi 3 is proving to be difficult to buy, we expect the Redmi 1S to be an even bigger task. Priced at Rs 6,999, the Redmi 1S features a 1.6GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot, a 4.7-inch 720p IPS display, 2,000mAh battery and 8-megapixel rear/1.6-megapixel front cameras. No other smartphone provides these features at this price.
Hugo Barra, Xiaomi’s vice president for international markets, had earlier promised that unlike the Mi 3, the company will launch the Redmi 1S with complete range of accessories and is also ramping up the number of units that will be available on launch day. Xiaomi brings its smartphones in batches and organizes flash sales where interested buyers have to pre-register and participate in the sale at a fixed time on the day of sale. Usually the number of pre-registered buyers are many times more than the number of units available.
The Xiaomi Mi 3 has become a frustration for interested buyers and a PR nightmare for Xiaomi. The last couple of flash sales have lasted for mere couple of seconds with many units eventually ending up hitting parallel online marketplaces, where they are being sold above their MRP.
Let’s see if Xiaomi is able to meet consumer demand with the Redmi 1S or not. Here’s the teaser post:
